Android phones have been the first to feature a bunch of notable standards. They were the first to support 4G , 5G , USB-C (way back in 2015 no less) and in-screen fingerprint sensors. And when it comes to wireless charging, you can trace that lineage all the way back to the Samsung Galaxy S3 from 2012 (though the webOS-poweered Palm Pre and its Touchstone charger is the true OG). Unfortunately, when it came to adding support for the Qi2 wireless charging standard to devices in 2024, it feels like Android phone makers were stuck on outdated patch notes. The Qi2 standard was officially announced in early 2023 during CES. We even gave it an award , as the spec looked to bring 15-watt wireless charging (and possibly more in future revisions), improved safety and critically the introduction of Magnetic Power Profiles that make it a cinch to align and attach compatible charging pads. In essence, Qi2 was set to bring the simplicity and ease of use iPhone owners enjoy with MagSafe products to the Android ecosystem. Not a single phone from any of the top three Android phone makers in the US (Samsung, Google and Motorola) offered support for Qi2 in 2024. (Photo by Sam Rutherford) Even more surprising is that in a rare move for a company that likes keeping its tech siloed neatly inside the walls of its ecosystem, Apple shared core parts of the MagSafe spec with other members of the Wireless Power Consortium (which is the governing body that oversees the Qi and Qi2 standards) to speed up development and interoperability. So you’d think after seeing the convenience and popularity of MagSafe accessories among iPhone users, Android phone makers would have rushed out to add Qi2 to as many devices as possible. But nearly two full years after the spec was finalized, the grand total of Android handsets that support Qi2 stands at one: the HMD Skyline. ADVERTISEMENT Advertisement At this point, you might be saying that product development cycles are multi-year processes that are difficult to change prior to launch. And in most cases, you’d probably be right. But let's be honest, it’s not like Samsung, Google, Lenovo and others didn’t see this coming. Like Apple, practically all of the big Android phone makers are also members of the WPC , so they would have known about the development of Qi2 long before it was officially announced. On top of that, the first iPhone with MagSafe was the iPhone 12 , which came out four years ago. So even if we assume that the first time Samsung, Google et al were presented with the idea of a magnetic wireless charging system was during Apple’s keynote in the fall of 2020, you’d imagine that’s still more than enough time to engineer similar technology for use on today’s Galaxy and Pixel handsets. (Photo by Sam Rutherford) For manufacturers, another concern when adopting a new standard is that there may not be enough accessories and other compatible peripherals on sale to make implementation of new tech worth it. We’ve seen this in the past with modular phones like the LG G5 and Moto Z Force line and the funky palm-reading tech on the LG G8 . However, because Qi2 and MagSafe gadgets are largely interchangeable , there’s already a huge market of options like Anker’s MagGo line of power banks, which are some of my current favorite portable battery packs. Another annoyance is that some phones like the Razr Plus and Pixel 9 Pro Fold will even stick magnetically to some Qi2 accessories and may even suck down a tiny bit of juice. Unfortunately, this is more of a coincidence caused by the magnets used to help keep foldables open or closed, rather than an intentional use case. This means that even though these devices may appear to support Qi2 at first glance, accessories don’t maintain a firm grip and often slide off even in what appear to be ideal circumstances. Even cases that claim to add support for Qi2 are hit or miss, resulting in a poor experience for Android phone owners hoping to recreate the magic of MagSafe on their own. It’s really a shame, because it almost feels like with a few small tweaks Google, Moto and others could unlocked Qi2 support on a wider range of devices without a ton of extra effort or cost. (Photo by Sam Rutherford/Engadget) Unfortunately, while many Chinese phone makers have avoided Qi2 up until this point, that’s sort of to be expected with manufacturers like Oppo often favoring proprietary tech like its 65-watt AirVOOC wireless charging instead of more widely accessible industry standard. And because the Galaxy S24 family came out at the very beginning of 2024, Samsung didn’t have quite as much time to add Qi2 to its current flagship lineup as Google, which launched the Pixel 9 series just a few months ago. Regardless, this still doesn’t explain the general reluctance of OEMs to adopt what I’d argue is one of the most meaningful upgrades in accessibility and general usability you can add to a smartphone today. But the most frustrating thing is that six months ago, our friends at CNET pondered why we had yet to see any Qi2 Android phones . And as we’re nearing the end of the year, there’s still only a single model trying to spark hope that 2025 will be different. So kudos to HMD for doing what Samsung, Google et al. couldn’t be bothered to figure out. Now I’m just worried that if things don’t change next year, one of the most promising standards could end up in the graveyard (at least for Android phones) before ever getting a chance to thrive.JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. The haemophilia community in Maharashtra is facing an alarming crisis as life-saving medications, including Factor VIII, Factor IX, Factor VII, and APCC for inhibitor patients, remain unavailable in government hospitals. Despite relentless advocacy efforts by the Hemophilia Society Mumbai Chapter and other concerned groups, the National Health Mission (NHM) has failed to resolve the issue, leaving thousands of patients vulnerable to severe pain, permanent disability, and even death. Maharashtra has more than 5500 haemophilia patients. For over two months, representatives from the Hemophilia Society Mumbai Chapter have held meetings with NHM officials, including on October 17, November 21, and December 5, urging immediate action. However, no resolution has been reached. On December 13, 21 patients seeking treatment at KEM Hospital, a major hemophilia care center in Mumbai, were turned away due to a lack of stock. The crisis is compounded by logistical hurdles. The daycare center at Thane civil hospital, one of the key treatment facilities, operates only until 4pm, making it inaccessible for patients travelling from distant areas. Many patients from Mumbai and other regions arrive after hours, unable to receive the treatment they desperately need. Additionally, the Thane facility has begun rationing its limited stock of clotting factors after NHM cancelled its procurement tender due to a lack of bidders. The absence of advanced, long-acting clotting factors further exacerbates the issue. These factors, which require only weekly infusions, are more efficient and cost-effective in the long run. However, they remain unavailable in government hospitals, forcing patients to endure frequent and disruptive treatments. “This neglect is creating more disabled people instead of empowering us. Without treatment, we cannot work, study, or support our families. The government is failing to protect our basic rights,” said Jigar Kotecha, honorary secretary of the Hemophilia Society Mumbai Chapter. The advocacy groups have demanded immediate action. Outlining the demands, they said there should be an uninterrupted supply of clotting factors to all government hospitals and NHM’s procurement process should be streamlined to prevent future delays. Apart from this, they also demanded an extension of operational hours at treatment centers like Thane hospital to accommodate patients from remote areas. The community has also urged Maharashtra’s Chief Minister to intervene directly and allocate state funding for hemophilia treatment, which currently stands at zero. The court, based in Costa Rica’s capital, said in a statement that the government violated his freedom of expression, his right to equality under the law and judicial protections. Capriles, an upper-middle class lawyer, used his charisma and non-combative style to win the support of millions and become an electoral threat to the since deceased President Hugo Chávez in 2012. Capriles would lose that election, and another the following year after Chávez’s death, to current President Nicolás Maduro. It was during that second bid in 2013 that the court on Monday said the government violated Capriles’ rights and favored Maduro. State resources were used to bolster Maduro’s candidacy, the court said. Even so, the result was exceedingly close. The court ruled that Venezuela’s government undermined the integrity of the election and affected the right of Venezuelans to freely elect their leader. In 2017, Maduro’s administration barred Capriles from running again for 15 years . Capriles already had a ruling from the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in his favor. The court had ordered the Venezuelan government to lift the ban on his political participation, but it was ignored. In January, the Supreme Justice Tribunal ratified Capriles' ban until 2032. Lamenting the contretemps, International Chess Federation President Arkady Dvorkovich said in a statement Sunday that he'd let World Blitz Championship tournament officials consider allowing “appropriate jeans” with a jacket, and other “elegant minor deviations” from the dress code. He said Carlsen's stand — which culminated in his quitting the tournament Friday — highlighted a need for more discussion “to ensure that our rules and their application reflect the evolving nature of chess as a global and accessible sport.” Carlsen, meanwhile, said in a video posted Sunday on social media that he would play — and wear jeans — in the World Blitz Championship when it begins Monday. “I think the situation was badly mishandled on their side,” the 34-year-old Norwegian grandmaster said. Marie man who was lobbying for December to be proclaimed Christian Heritage Month by city hall says he will continue his effort — while a spokesperson in the mayor's office says so no formal request has come across his desk. Arnold Heino was recently named the People's Party of Canada candidate for Sault Ste. Marie and is behind a local attempt to have Christian Heritage Month recognized. He first sent an email on the subject Nov. 29, hoping for the declaration to be part of one of the city council meetings scheduled for Dec. 2 and 9. "There's a number of communities across Canada that have recognized December as Christian Heritage Month," Heino said in an interview on Monday. "I think my biggest disappointment is that they haven't reached out to me yet." "One of the biggest reasons why I think it's important is because the very first sentence in our Charter of Rights is this is a country based on the supremacy of God. You can't hide that." A group called the Christian Music Festival, which is operated by Jay and Molly Banerjei, is supporting the effort to have December recognized across Canada as Christian Heritage Month. On its website, the group says more than 40 municipalities across Canada have made proclamations, including Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Sudbury and others. The proclamation was hotly debated in council chambers in Toronto last month , but was eventually passed by a vote of 11 to 4. Parkdale—High Park councillor Gord Perks led the opposition to the motion in Toronto. Perks said he was wary of the request, in part, because the motion lacked information on the Christian Heritage Festival organization. Christianity, Perks argued, is already so entrenched in Canadian society that a standalone month isn’t necessary. “Canada as an entity is soaked and steeped in the Christian church. They do not need separate recognition. When we do something like recognize some different group, that is an effort to rebalance,” he said. Perks also said the role Christianity played in colonization, while also serving as the backbone of the residential school system, is not something to celebrate. For many years, the mayor would make proclamations at the start of Sault Ste. Marie City Council meetings. Allard said the long-standing process was changed last year and all applications must go through the city's web page to set up for proclamations. Allard acknowledged that Heino's email was received, but said a formal application through the city's website never came through. "The procedural bylaw was amended in 2023 to move proclamations from council meetings to prerecorded videos that are shared on social media and broadcast by Rogers Media," said Allard in a series of emailed responses made earlier this month. "The requestor was directed to the proper process for proclamation." Heino said he has reached out to the Christian Heritage Month group for some guidance, but had already begun the process of applying for the declaration prior to becoming aware of them. A melee broke out at midfield of Ohio Stadium after Michigan upset No. 2 Ohio State 13-10 on Saturday. After the Wolverines' fourth straight win in the series, players converged at the block "O" to plant its flag. The Ohio State players were in the south end zone singing their alma mater in front of the student section. When the Buckeyes saw the Wolverines' flag, they rushed toward the 50-yard line. Social media posts showed Michigan offensive lineman Raheem Anderson carrying the flag on a long pole to midfield, where the Wolverines were met by dozens of Ohio State players and fights broke out. Buckeyes defensive end Jack Sawyer was seen ripping the flag off the pole and taking the flag as he scuffled with several people trying to recover the flag. A statement from the Ohio State Police Department read: "Following the game, officers from multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in breaking up an on-field altercation. Saints interim coach Darren Rizzi figured that a visit to playoff-bound Green Bay would be a tall order for his injury-riddled squad, whose prominent missing players included starters at quarterback, running back and receiver. And when New Orleans’ mostly healthy defensive front struggled against a Packers ground game led by running back Josh Jacobs, the rout was on. Nothing “stuck out on film other than a lack of execution and lack of playmaking,” Rizzi said Tuesday after reviewing video of Monday night’s 34-0 loss at Green Bay. “We played against a playoff team, at their place, that has very few holes on their team,” Rizzi added. “It was a little bit of a perfect storm.” Rizzi, a special teams coordinator who has made no secret that he sees his eight-game interim stint as an opportunity to further his head-coaching ambitions, has two more games left in what has been an up-and-down audition. The Saints are 3-3 on his watch, which includes one of New Orleans’ most lopsided losses since the turn of the century. With the playoffs unattainable, and with a lot of reserves pressed into service, the final two weeks will serve primarily as a player-evaluation period heading into the offseason, when there are bound to be myriad changes on the roster and perhaps the coaching staff. They couldn’t stop the run (188 yards allowed). They couldn’t pass the ball consistently (129 yards) or stop the pass when they needed to.
