Job Description

We are a unique Design-Build construction company in Santa Barbara seeking an Architectural Designer to work under the Kellow Construction brand. This part-time, 1099 position involves collaborating with our company president and estimator to develop accurate, creative designs that meet client expectations. The role offers flexibility to work from home with on-site visits as needed.

As an Architectural Designer with Kellow Construction, you will work directly with clients, our president, and our builders to develop thoughtful, well-executed designs. You will also collaborate with other designers to ensure budgets, construction methods, and timelines align with project goals.

Compensation: DOE (please include your desired hourly rate in your cover letter).

Employment Type: Part-time (1099 contractor).

Software: Negotiable - access to our AutoCAD subscription is available.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Design architectural spaces under the Kellow brand, ensuring alignment with client needs, structural requirements, and construction standards.

Develop creative and functional designs that incorporate client input while adhering to building codes and practical construction methods.

Collaborate closely with builders and project managers to ensure that designs align with budget constraints, timelines, and construction techniques.

Produce precise and to scale drawings using CAD, Revit, or Chief Architect, including schematic designs, construction drawings, and presentation materials.

Prepare detailed architectural documentation, including floor plans, elevations, sections, and material specifications.

Create visual representations such as renderings, concept sketches, and design presentations to effectively communicate ideas to clients and stakeholders.

Support pre-construction planning, including feasibility studies, site assessments, and zoning/code compliance evaluations.

Develop permitting packages and manage permit submissions, including coordinating with city or county planning departments and ensuring compliance with local regulations.

Maintain organized design documentation, respond to RFIs, and address design challenges during construction phases.

Engage clients throughout the design process, ensuring clarity, collaboration, and alignment with project goals.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum of 2 years of professional experience as an Architectural Designer or within a design-build environment.

Proficiency in CAD, Revit, or Chief Architect for drafting, modeling, and creating detailed design documents.

Strong ability to produce technical drawings, comprehensive design documentation, and engaging presentations.

Experience with site planning, building layouts, permitting packages, and material selection.

Familiarity with permit management, including preparation, submission, and follow-up with local authorities.

Excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with clients, builders, and project teams.

Highly organized, with the ability to manage time efficiently and meet project deadlines.

Availability for on site visits and coordination meetings as needed.

Confident in decision making and client leadership, while being an excellent listener to ensure both client and estimator input are valued and executed.
