Nature of Work

Special Hiring Rate: $45,052.80

This is an entry-level position within the Environmental Chemistry Section. The incumbent performs standardized quantitative chemical analyses of drinking water as assigned by the Section Supervisor.

Key responsibilities include:

• Conducting laboratory tests and analyses in accordance with standard operating procedures.
• Safely and effectively operating and maintaining various scientific instruments, including:
• Gas chromatograph/mass spectrometry (GC/MS)
• Flame atomic absorption (FAA)
• Inductively-coupled plasma emission (ICP)
• Ion chromatography (IC)
• Selective ion electrode instrumentation
• Performing quality control (QC) and quality assessment (QA) procedures to ensure data reliability.
• Maintaining appropriate levels of stock chemicals and consumables required for laboratory operations.
• Interpreting data and test results under close supervision.

Minimum Qualifications

Training: Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in a biological, microbiological, chemical, or environmental science, medical technology, molecular biology, forensic science or related field.

Special Requirement: For positions which involve processing and analysis of human specimens and/or the generation or interpretation of laboratory results that may be used in the diagnosis or treatment of a disease or condition in humans, the incumbent must have or be eligible for licensure as a WV Clinical Laboratory Practitioner as required by 64 C.S.R.§57.
