Job Description

The Electrical Design Engineer will be responsible for the development of comprehensive electrical construction packages, ensuring compliance with company standards and industry best practices.

The role involves creating and managing technical drawings, reviewing design documentation, and supporting construction and engineering teams throughout the project lifecycle. The candidate will work closely with internal teams, contractors, and external engineering firms to facilitate efficient project execution.

Key Responsibilities:

Electrical Design & Documentation:

  • Develop and maintain detailed electrical construction packages , including single-line diagrams, motor schematics, panel layouts, cable and conduit routing, grounding plans, and interlock schematics.
  • Perform load calculations, voltage drop analysis, and short-circuit analysis to ensure system reliability and compliance with electrical codes and refinery standards.
  • Utilize AutoCAD to create and modify electrical drawings, ensuring clarity and accuracy for construction teams and contractors.
  • Develop bill of materials (BOMs), wiring schedules, and termination details to support procurement and installation efforts.
  • Ensure all drawings and documentation comply with industry standards (e.g., NEC, IEEE, API, and refinery-specific regulations) and internal company guidelines.

Field Verification & Construction Support:

  • Conduct site walk-downs to verify existing conditions, identify potential design conflicts, and gather necessary field data before initiating design work.
  • Provide technical support during installation, testing, and commissioning of electrical systems, ensuring designs are properly implemented in the field.
  • Collaborate with maintenance and operations teams to troubleshoot issues related to electrical designs and recommend practical solutions.

Engineering Collaboration & Project Coordination:

  • Interface with engineering firms and contractors to support external design efforts, ensuring alignment with refinery design standards and project requirements.
  • Assist in locating and reviewing reference drawings, as-built documentation, and existing electrical infrastructure details to support ongoing projects.
  • Review submitted design packages from external engineering firms to confirm they meet company design specifications, safety regulations, and industry standards .
  • Facilitate and lead design review meetings , addressing feedback from stakeholders and ensuring all design deliverables are properly documented and approved.
  • Ensure proper submission, organization, and archiving of final design deliverables , maintaining an up-to-date repository of electrical drawings and documents.

Required Experience & Skills:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in electrical design, with at least 3 years in a refinery, petrochemical, or heavy industrial plant environment .
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for electrical drafting and design.
  • Strong understanding of industrial power systems, motor controls, instrumentation, and automation .
  • Familiarity with electrical codes and standards , such as NEC, IEEE, and API.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications , including Excel, Word, and Outlook, for documentation and reporting.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail , with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills , with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with PLC control systems, SCADA integration, or industrial automation .
  • Knowledge of protective relaying, arc flash studies, and power system modeling software .
  • Experience in developing electrical work scopes and supporting procurement efforts .
  • Familiarity with refinery management of change (MOC) processes and safety protocols.
